Speaker wire Size

A hot topic that never seems to cool down is what size speaker wire do I need. You don't need to spend a fortune to get good speaker wire. Fancy wires that are as thick as 2 sticks of licorice are not necessary. The answer is pretty simple. In most cases 14 gauge will do just fine as most folks don't have speakers more than 10 - 15 feet apart. If you are running longer length's than that you might consider 12 gauge or lower. Although there are lots of posts about using lamp cord we'd recommend buying a good quality speaker wire instead. The following attributes can make speaker wire easier to use:

Gold and silver wire makes keeping speakers in phase easier (hooking up red to red and black to black)
Same with a white stripe along on of the wires
Using banana plugs or other connectors to make connecting to your speaker or receiver easier

Safety Tip: Remember that in-wall and in-ceiling speakers require special wire and you should check your local building code.

Speaker Stands

Folks are always asking us about speaker stands. Although we do not sell them there are lots of places online to pick them up. When mounting speakers always keep the following in mind.

Make sure the stands or mounts are appropriate for your size & weight speaker
Be sure to follow the manufacturer's directions when setting up the stands
Consider your environmnet. If you have small children you'll want to be careful about putting a heavy speaker on a stand where little hands might pull it down on themselves.
Consider hiring a professional to mount large bookshelf speakers on a wall if you're not handy

Enjoy Your Subwoofer Safely

Everyone loves the low sound effects that a good subwoofer can deliver.

Subwoofers are different than your other speakers in your home theater setup in that a subwoofer contains a power amplifier and must be plugged in to an electrical outlet to operate.

With proper care and consideration your subwoofer can safely satisfy your lowest needs for many years. Here are some common sense rules to follow.

Always completely read the manual that came with your subwoofer and follow its instructions before operating as each may contain specific safety instructions.

-------------------------------------------------------

Operation

Set your subwoofer to standby or off mode when not in use. This reduces power consumption
Don't let the power cord or other cable stretch across the floor where someone might trip over it.
Don't use your subwoofer as a stepping stool or a seating device
Don't put objects containing water on you subwoofer including plants (they won't like the low frequencies anyway)
Don't push your subwoofer beyond its limits. If it sounds like it's clipping (rattleing or tapping noise) turn it down. Never operate you sub at full volume
Use the correct cabling to hook up your sub to your receiver.
Never use a subwoofer outdoors unless it is specifically designed for outdoor use
Always read your subwoofers manual before operating and follow its instructions.

Subwoofer Maintence

NEVER open your subwoofer, there is nothing inside you can likely fix and you may risk serious injury.
Clean you subwoofers exterior with a dry dust cloth. For more specific cleaning instructions follow the advice in your subs manual.
Never touch or clean the driver (speaker)

Things we should not have to tell you

Never operate your subwoofer in a wet or damp area
Never submerge your subwoofer in liquid

I did say these were common sense but following this advice will help you safely enjoy your subwoofer for many years.

In-Wall & In-Ceiling Speaker Wiring

If you're attempting to install in-wall or in-ceiling speakers yourself, here are a few things to keep in mind about speaker wire.

You will need a special wire to run inside walls that complies with your local building code. Usually UL rated wire labeled CL2 or CL3.
Speaker wire gauge will differ depending on how far your running from your receiver or amp. Less than 75 feet 16 gauge, 75 to 175 14 gauge, more than 175 feet consider 12 gauge.

Little black sticky things

Some of you have asked what the "little black sticky things" are that come with the IC & IW speakers. They are for used in the very rare (and we mean very) occasion where the grille is not tight against the bezel and develops a rattle. By placing a small amount of the black sticky stuff against the side of the grille that is rattling you can stop the friction and the noise. If you lost this with the packaging and you develop a rattle not to worry, most mailable putty's found at Home Depot used for insulation will also do the trick.

Help, My Flat Panel TV Speakers Sound Bad

If you're like many people the recession is not stopping you from getting a Home Theater setup with a nice 42" or larger flat panel TV. Your logic is likely that you'll save money by getting more of your entertainment at home rather than paying for a movie for a family of four. You're correct! By the time you've purchased tickets, popcorn, drinks and maybe a candy or two your out $60-$70. Do that 10 times and you've got the price of a decent TV.

Great Picture, OK sound
Flat panel TV's are geared toward doing one thing really well; delivering a stunning video experience. Unfortunately as they have never delivered great sound and as they get thinner there is less and less room for quality speakers. Bad sounding tiny speakers in your TV will ruin your Home Theater experience.

Getting Better Sound From Your Home Theater
The best way to improve on the sound of your TV speakers is to upgrade your sound system to a full fledged Home Theater speaker system. There are several ways to approach this from a simple 3.1 system to a full 7.1 system. To start with you'll need a good quality home theater receiver, we recommend either Denon or Marantz though many other brands make quality receivers as well. Then you can build your home theater speaker system out in one of 4 ways;

7.1 which as 2 rear surround channels.

Currently my iPod leads a shiftless and nomadic existence. Other than a brief rendezvous with a syncing cable every now and then, the pin connectors lie dormant, in wait for a place to call home. Product update

The good news for us is that we sold out of the initial run of T300 subwoofers in less than 60 days. The better news is you love them! Read some of the reviews on the T300 product page. After the first couple of weeks of sales we realized hey, we've got to reorder these. We expect our next shipment on June 10. This time we ordered a whole lot more of them.

TSAT's are back. At least they're back in-country. As of this morning the TSAT's are still sitting in customs waiting to be cleared. Hopefully they will be back in by the end of the week. Unfortunately we will sell out of these quickly but... we already placed another order so we won't be out for long.

Towers vs. Bookshelf/Subwoofer Combination: Both Have Benefits

As sound fanatics, or one that appreciates quality sound, we're all on a quest for the optimal listening experience. The combinations that one can create for their own optimal listening experience are as varied as the flavors of beer.

In this post, we will look at two distinct listening systems -- the tower system and the subwoofer/bookshelf speakers combination system. Both have distinct advantages and drawbacks. Note that these are so different that one could actually consider these different approaches to listening.

The Tower System
If you don't actually have one, you know the tower system -- two large speakers that contain tweeter, woofer and usually a midrange speaker, all in one speaker. These are sold as pairs and are also called floorstanding speakers as they stand on the floor, by themselves, and are created so they can provide the listener with great sounds literally out of the box.

Advantages to Using a Tower System
There are many advantages to using tower speakers over a bookshelf/subwoofer combination. Some include:

Aesthetics -- A nice pair of tower speakers can look great in the right room

Simplicity -- The sound is coming from only two places in the room and can be projected to the desired area

The Bookshelf/Subwoofer System
The bookshelf/subwoofer system is different from the towers in a number of ways, including:

Bookshelf speakers are not intended for placement on the floor. Like their name implies, they can be (and should be, for optimal listening) placed on bookshelfs, stands or other spots that are directed at the listeners.

In a bookshelf/subwoofer system the bookshelf provides the high-range and midrange sounds, while the subwoofer provides all low end sounds

Advantages to Using a Bookshelf/Subwoofer System

The bookshelf and subwoofer combination also has distinct advantages that many should consider when putting together a stereo or home theater system. These include:

Less Power Requirements -- Because the subwoofer is powered, the listeners amp/receiver only needs to power the bookshelf speaker and not the subwoofer or low end frequencies.

More Flexible Placement -- The subwoofer is a different speaker altogether than the bookshelf speakers, and it can be placed anywhere. Bookshelf speakers are also much smaller than towers, so they can be placed in a number of places also. This often allows for more ideal placement of the speaker for optimal listening.

In the end, your individual listening taste and preferences will determine what you like. However, be sure to explore as many options as possible before finding that ideal combination taht fits your needs and preferences.

Why sell high quality speakers at such cheap prices?

Because we can. Speakers don't cost that much to manufacture. Markups occur when distributors and dealers get involved. You can read more about that from the article The Hidden Costs of Speakers.

To date, we've been able to source our speakers from factories that make other name brand speakers or from factories where the company has recently gone out of business. As you can see, we now have a full line of quality speakers.

How will we make money?

High volume, pure and simple. We operate on thin margins. We can operate on these margins because we don't have to pay distributors or dealers to sell the product.

We also have online affiliates that we pay commissions for placing our links on their sites, which helps publicize our company and products. We also purchase online advertising in the form of keywords.

The drive unit in the ASW-10 features an injection molded polypropylene cone to increase stiffness, yet maintain an overall low moving mass. This increases the effective output without requiring substantial power to drive the woofer. The flared bass reflex port increases air flow without audible port noises and completes the package.

The drive unit also features a 1.5” voice coil, a 30oz. ferrite magnet assembly. The surround shape allows for a long travel without the woofer cone moving off center at either end of the stroke. Combined, these components allow this 10” woofer to move up to full excursion with very linear behavior. That means remarkably accurate bass in your home entertainment system that you can hear AND feel.

Who Is The Speaker Company?

Since we began operations last December, there have been lots of questions flying about The Speaker Company. Who are we? Why are we selling high quality speakers at such cheap prices? What's the deal?

So, let's come out here and explain things better. We think that once you understand what we're about and how we operate, you'll be quite comfortable with us. In fact, we think that once you get it and get us, you'll want to be a part of what we're doing, but that's for another time.

Who Are We?

We're a project that was started by a larger company, and now the organization has grown into its own entity. If you want to find out who the larger company is, Google us. Frankly, it's not important, as we are our own entity. If you're the kind of person that just can't stand not to know, do just a little research and you'll find out.

Our founders saw that there was a need for a company that sells speakers inexpensively online, and they knew that it could be done. They helped us get off the ground, put us in touch with factories that were creating other expensive, high line speakers, and let the conversations begin.

The rest is history. The Speaker Company was able to begin sourcing quality speakers at huge discounts and passing the savings on to our customers. We found quality lines, high quality lines, some from companies that are still operating, and others that are discontinued.

At first, some of our lines were good. Over time, we found some fantastic speaker deals, and we jumped on them. We were able to get great speakers -- all types of speakers -- at great prices. Towers, satellites, bookshelfs, in-walls, outdoors, surrounds, you name it. We did it.

The web can be quite counterintuitive, we've found.

TC2 vs The RC1 Center Channels

Many readers ask us if they should buy the highly rated RC1 or the brand new TC2 for a center channel speaker. This is a great question. Here are some excerpts from his review.

As a newcomer, but with a respectable heritage, the TSAT-2000s offer a great value. If you are looking for a quality set of classy, unobtrusive speakers to go with your flat panel TV, this is probably one of the best bargains going.

These are classy looking speakers. They've got some heft and feel very solid. The cabinets are made of wood and have a 5 layer hand rubbed lacquer finish giving a nice deep glossy black look that reminds me of a highly polished grand piano. The grills are a matching black finish and attach via small magnets, making removal and re-installation a breeze.

So with a smile on my face, I auditioned them for the rest of the day. I listened to music while working around the house, watched portions of the HD versions of 300 and Serenity, and played some Guitar Hero and the TSATs performed well for all uses. I pumped the volume well past my comfort level and they remained clear and without any obtrusive hissing.

The set includes an ingeniously simple mounting system that should let you mount them however you would like. Basically screw the plate to the wall or into a corner and then use a set of included screws to attach the speaker to the plate.

The Speaker Company's TSAT 1000 & 2000 Satellite Speaker System

It's been a great ride so far for tSc but the weathers changing and we're about to turn up the heat. A new line of speakers will debut this summer from The Speaker Company. Today I'll share some pictures and information on two of the models in our new "T" series.

Our new TSAT 1000 and 2000 satellite speakers will turn some heads for sure. With 5 layers of hand-rubbed high-gloss lacquer they'll bowl you over. (no cheap plastic cabinets here!) Everyone we've shown these to has asked "when can I buy a set?" The TSAT 1000 satellite speakers come with 1 - 3.5" aluminum mid-bass driver and one HiCell high efficiency tweeter. Of course these sats sound as smooth as they look.

The TSAT 2000 has the same great look as the TSAT 2000 satellite speakers but with 2 - 3.5" mid-woofers. Both models come in black or white. Besides looking and sounding great the TSAT's are an easy to set up surround sound system with a flexible mounting system. You can stand them on a shelf, hang them on a wall or in the corners or ceilings. Simply mount the bracket to the wall then screw the speaker (through holes in the front) onto the bracket. Cheap iPod Speakers that Sound Great

iPod docks are a dime a dozen and cost from $49 to $350. Honestly most of the ones between $49 and $100 don't sound very good. A great alternative is to use Multimedia speakers to fill iPod or MP3 speaker needs. The Speaker Company offers two great MP3 Player friendly speaker systems for under $50.

New In-Wall Speaker Installation Guide with Pictures

We just finished a slideshow on how to install TSC in-wall speakers. This installation of our IW-D5 LCR front surround system took a little over an hour to complete. Most of the time was spent on planning and measuring. Once we were sure where to cut the holes, (that's honestly the hardest part!) it took no time at all.

This serves as a guide to how our in-ceiling speakers would be installed also, except of course they would be in the ceiling. ;)

RC1 Center Channel Speaker Reviews

As I mentioned earlier this week the RC1 center channel speaker is one of our more popular speakers and now we are getting the reviews that show why.

Most times in life, you get what you pay for. There are however, rare exceptions where you feel that you got more than you paid for. This is one of those times.
Yeah, I love to hear the booming cannons in Master and Commander, and the sound of MG-42 bullets whizzing by in Band of Brothers, but I also want to hear what the actors are saying and it gets a little tougher when you’re middle aged. There is good voice clarity, accuracy and depth in this speaker – I’m hearing lines of dialogue on my DVDs that I hadn’t noticed before.

I wasn’t sure how it would sound with my old B&W front channel speakers, but the frequency range seems pretty close so it sounds like a good sonic match. The vocal range is very good and the sound is definitely beefier than the Pinnacle that had been my center channel speaker. Darth Vader’s resonant voice sounds like James Earl Jones, not like David Spade. Also, I’m not sure what they’ve done with the tweeter but the highs don’t sound shrill or tinny at all when the volume gets cranked (driven by my Pioneer VSX-1015TX @ 120 watts).

Finally, I know that “heft” is a cliché in consumer electronics but this speaker is solid, with a good finish. Apparently low price doesn’t mean skimping on construction or looks.

Given that I wasn’t paying for the overhead of advertising or distribution through a retailer, it’s not too surprising that the prices are great. Now, if The Speaker Company only had a nice iPod docking station for the wife …

A center channel speaker is essential to give voice its presence in a movie or multichannel broadcast. The Speaker Company center channel does this effortlessly. The bonus is what it adds to music. i have front speakers that are quite a bit more expensive than the center channel. The center adds dimension without any detriment to the sound. i highly recommend it over center speakers six times more expensive. i recommend The Speaker Company to anyone looking for high quality loudspeakers at a great bargain price!
